Part 5 Easy Street

I am linking up with Bonnie Hunter on part 5 of Easy Street.  If you want to see what everyone else has been up to this last week hop on over to Quiltville  and check it out.  There are many, many link ups for you to see.

This week we were making these....
Bonnie said we would not be making anymore flying geese so these are flying turkeys.  I just love these colors.  Maybe next week we can play with the lime green.

Here is my design wall this week.  It has a block from each part on it.

Saturday morning when I got up, I could see the sunrise through the blinds.  I went outside and this is what I saw...

We live in a valley and this is looking at the Smoky Mountains.

I hope you all have a wonderful week.....

We are still walking down Easy Street

I haven't been able to keep up with Easy Street as I was busy working on a customer's weighted blanket.  If you don't know what a weighted blanket is, it is a blanket with pellet filling that makes the blanket heavy.  They are used by autistic children and adults.  They have a calming effect while they are covering the person.  It's like putting 5 or 6 quilts on top of you.

So, I was 2 weeks behind in Bonnie Hunters Easy Street.  If you would like to participate, click here and it will take you to her site. It is not too late to start.  Anyway, part 2 was to make 128 flying geese.
In step 3, we got to make 64 shaded 4 patches.
So this week for part 4 we got to make 64 more flying geese and these we attached to 64 of the flying geese from part 2.
So now I am caught up with my parts and I hope that I can keep up.  My design wall looks like this right now...
I love to have this right in front of me while I work.  I will see everyone next week with an update on the next part.  I know that next week we will be using lime green, and I can't wait!

peace,

It's a walk on Easy Street

It's that time of year again for Bonnie Hunter's mystery.  If you want to participate, you can find it here.  This year it is called Easy Street.  And true to the name, it is a walk on Easy Street.  We are making 4 patch units for the first clue.  Thank you Bonnie for teaching me how to spin my seams.

I cannot wait to see how this mystery comes out.  Besides the browns and creams, I will be using purple, lime green and turquoise.  Some of my favorite colors!!!!

I know that I have not posted a lot in the last few months.  I do need to get back in the habit of posting once a week if not more.

Thank you all for coming .  I hope y'all have a wonderful time blog hopping.

Quilts of Valor

I have been named the Tennessee Regional Coordinator for Quilts of Valor.  I had the honor of presenting my first two quilts on Saturday at the Tennessee Smokies Salute to Heroes Night.

I had a table on the concourse telling people about the Quilts of Valor Foundation.

The first presentation was to the team physician. He was a full time medic deployed with a MASH unit, but now he is in the reserves and takes his turn in the rotation as he is an orthopedic surgeon. He says he will be going back to Afghanistan sooner rather than later. He didn't know he was receiving a quilt until I told him. (I let the goose out of the bag.). He told me he didn't deserve to receive a quilt like this. I told him yes he did because of all the sacrifice that he has made for our country. This presentation was made before the game on the field. I didn't have to talk for this one, as they had to keep a very tight time schedule and we (the announcer and I) had already decided what he was going to say. It was a very humbling and special first presentation.

The second presentation was at the top of the 7th inning. It was to a World War II Purple Heart veteran. He had just gone overseas and he was wounded. He had to have his leg amputated. There were problems and he have to have the rest of his leg amputated. He was only nineteen years old at the time. That happened 67 years ago. I tried to talk when they had the microphone in front of me. I got out "I would like to present this quilt to.....then I forgot everything I was going to say. Luckily my husband was in front of me taking pictures and he mouthed "Purple Heart" so I got out Purple Heart and I looked at him again like now what. He mouthed "recipient" and I said recipient and then the rest just flowed from there. I'm so glad that he was there in front of me. When I got done my recipient turned to me and said he was so grateful that someone thought enough of him to nominate him for the quilt. He said through tears that he was going to use it while he watched TV in the evenings. He said that when he passed, he was going to have it go to his great granddaughter.

I was on the news that night for all of maybe 10 seconds but you can see the news broadcast at the link below.
Have a wonderful 4th of July.  Be safe and God Bless America!!!

What's on YOUR Bed

Bonnie Hunter from Quiltville's Quips & Snips is having a Linky Party over on her site here.  She was changing her sheets and quilts today and wanted to know what everyone else had on their beds.  I wanted to play too so here is mine.

Up until this past week it seemed like summer so we only had 1 quilt on the bed.  Then it got chilly at night again.  Down into the 40's.  I had to throw another quilt on the bed.  My DH had double bypass surgery 7 years ago and gets colder than I do.  So he has an extra quilt on his side.  That is my baby kitty Daisy.  She's not really a baby kitty anymore, but that is still how I think of her.

This is DH's Tennessee Music quilt.  We lived in Nashville for a while and he was a musician.  I just wanted him something to remember our time there.  Of course it is Tennessee orange and there is also music fabric in there.  I did machine embroidery on it for him.  I even let him pick out the pattern from Marcie Hohn Quilter's Cache here.

Here is a close up of the center.  The bottom left green thing is his logo.

And for the back I used a piece of music fabric I had left for the center and then just put leftover orange and black until the back was large enough.

On my half and under his quilt is my split nine patch.  I am in a couple of other yahoo groups and one of them had this swap back in 2001.  I had just bought my tri recs ruler at the time and wanted to try it out.  I interspersed my split nine patches with them.  I have the rest of the split nine patches on the border.

Under that and what I had on in the first place my friendship star swap.  This was from the same group I did the split nine patches with.  I did a piano key border before I even knew what a piano key border was.  I thought I was being creative doing it.  These are from 2000 and most of the stars are signed by the person who made it with the date and their city.  It has been washed many many times and the signatures are still there.

My piano key border with my half square triangles.

Signatures still there.

I hope you have enjoyed your tour of what is on my bed.  Now what is on your bed?

Happy Sunday everyone!!!  Today I decided that I wanted to make a shopping bag from a new pattern that I have.  I started off with the green and pink fabric and built the rest of my bag around it.  The red fabric I dyed myself a few years ago.  I thought it went great with the flowers.  DH and I couldn't decided between gold, orange or white for the rest.  I think the gold we settled on goes well.

This shows a better view of the green and the red.

I also put a decorative stitch around the top.  I am so excited about this bag, I think I want to make a few more.  Maybe some orange and white for Tennessee and green and gold for the packers.  I just may be on to something here.

Next weekend I want to make a purse.  I have the fabrics picked out.  I will be using so batiks for it.  I'm trying to expand my horizons....lol

I hope everyone has a great week and I will talk to ya later.....

A Mountain Quiltfest

Lookie at what I got!!!!  I went to A Mountain Quiltfest in Pigeon Forge on Friday.  I really enjoyed looking around at all the vendors and quilts they had.  The first vendor I stopped at had scrap bags (I love scraps) for $2.99.  I bought 7 and he asked how many were left.  I told him 4 and he told me to go ahead and take them.  So after tax it was a little over $23 for my 11 bags of scraps.   I took my 11 bags of scraps out to my car so I could go back in and look some more.  I also bought a new pair of sissors and a pattern.  I got home and sorted them out.  There was some flannel and some cotton.  Of course I had to see just how much fabric I came home with.  The were full width of fabric cuts from 2 inches to 24 inches.  I ended up with 5 yards of flannel and 9 1/2 yards of cotton.  I have it all washed and now I'm ironing it so I can introduce it to all my other fabric.

This morning I decided I wanted to clean out my storage drawers.  So I spent about 3 hours sorting everything out and now I have all my flannel together instead of in 4 different drawers.  I started working on my Barristers Sow-A-Long! blocks.  I've got the last 3 done and I just have to do the 2 bonus blocks yet.  I have them all cut out, just have to find time to sew them together.

I also choose my fabrics for the Quilt For Valor mystery quilt.  If you would like to play along on the mystery quilt go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MysteryQuilts4Military/ and sign up.  A new clue is posted every Friday.

I hope y'all have a wonderful week.  I'll talk to ya later,

Food Pantry

I work for a church as the office manager.  We have a food pantry that is run by the Deacon's.  The Pastor  and I went shopping and bought quite a bit of food.  We took my truck so we would have enough room to put everything.  We bought enough to make up 15 food boxes.  Our food boxes will feed a family of 4 for a week so there is quite a bit of food in there.  I really enjoy this part of my job as I get to help people that need a helping hand.  Some people we see every month and some people we see a time or two and then they are back on their feet.  In this economy we are finding less and less resources to get food to stock our pantry.  We would get food from a government agency and they told us that they do not have anymore funding so that leaves us (the church) having to buy item to keep it going.  But, it's ok, as long as we can keep it open because that is what is important.

I live in East Tennessee and we got hit by the bad weather yesterday.  On my way home from work they said that there was a funnel cloud spotted about 4 miles from where I was.  I was thankful that I left a few minutes early.  I live in the Smokey Mountains and we just had strong winds and a lot of rain but at least no tornado.

Tomorrow will be a sew day for me.  I want to finish getting my Sitka Bay rows together so I can get on to other things.  I hope you have a great day wherever you are.

My Sitka Bay or Bonnie Hunter's Orca Bay

I now have all the parts for my Sitka Bay quilt.  I tried 4 different layouts and my DH and I liked this version best.  We did an Alaskan cruise in 2008 for our 20th anniversary.  When we stopped in Sitka we did a whale watching excursion so that is why my vresion is named Sitka Bay.  It was rainy and cold that day, but it was the BEST time.  We were out about 45 minutes and then suddenly we were surrounded by whales.  The boat captain turned off the boat so we would not hit any whales.  We watched them jump out of the water for about 30 minutes before they left.  Did you know that whale tails are all different?  They are like our fingerprints.  We also got to see sea otters.  The momma's and their babies were in one area and the dad's off on their own in another.  The momma's would lay on their back and the babies would lay on momma's chest.  It was just so precious.

Thank you Bonnie Hunter for a wonderful mystery.  I will post another picture once this is quilted and bound.  If you want to see Bonnie's Orca Bay mystery go to her site here.
